They appear to be Humpbacks which are thriving along the Pacific Coast - we see them every year literally by the hundreds
in Maui where they come to winter -- also I have seen lines of them off shore from San Diego on their way south to Cabo.

They are humpbacks. Look at the size of the flippers.

Well I don't think Humpbacks or any other whales would venture into Russell Fjord for fear of stranding but I think I will just take my new Auster and recce down my bouyed shipping channel to find a nice spot for them :flying:

I think they should post a notam for lowflying cetaceans in the area. They definitely are hazourdous to planes.

Here is a Video which takes about five or six minutes to download but can be played in Windows Media Player direct from the unzip...It plays for four and a quarter minutes and does have a few glimpses of the whales but it is mostly about the Auster:-
