I get the same feeling...to upgrade you really have to upgrade evrything to the latest or get these little gliches. IE 6.whatever works perfectly and that's what came with my PC and it's all compatable. Folks which brand new up to date systems say 8 is fine and that seems to be the difference. :think:

I think that's probably the case Garry. IE7 was supposed to be THE browser for Vista and I guess IE8 is designed to work best with Win7 despite M$ claiming backward compat with older OS's. Both IE7 and IE8 give me blurred screen fonts (in the browser itself) with XP an no amount of fiddling gets rid of it hence.. I kept this pc with IE6.5 and the new pc has Firefox. I don't particularly like Firefox (it looks too much like IE7) but I DO get clear screen fonts ;-)

Have you tried switching the "Clear Type" setting in IE7?
In IE7 ,ook in "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab >"
Remove the check mark from "Always use ClearType for HTML". From what I have heard that setting has some impact on how fonts appear on certain systems, depending on the hardware you have, particularly old monitors. (Apologies if you've already tried that).

Yes I have mate and it had little impact on what I was seeing. At the moment.. I'm switching between IE6 on the old pc and IE7/Firefox on this one as I see different things with each browser. You can watch streamed video in Firefox (off DemandFive in this case) no problemo but if you want to 'hire' an episode.. you have to have IE7/IE8 as the primary browser :roll: I've spent the past couple of days trying to upload a video to YouTube and again.. you see different things in IE7 to what you see in IE6. Another 1.5hrs attempt (just finished) so we'll see what the end result is this time.. no green blocks I hope!

I really don't care for the 'tabs' bit in Firefox though Firefox displays clearly. IE7 shows some advantages but displays not so clearly (screenfonts) and now many sites are stating (YouTube being one) that they're about to stop support for IE6. A rock and a hard place :brick: IE8 displays exactly the same as IE7 for me so it looks like my internet days are numbered

The "Clear Type" setting in IE7 and IE8's Options "Advanced Tab" doesn't have any impact unless you also switch the "Clear Type" options switched off on your PC's "Display Properties" as well in XP. If IE7's fonts don't not change much when you switch "Clear Type" off or on in IE7, then it may be because your "Display Properties" settings also have "Clear Type" switched on. You need to kill both settings at the same time or IE7 wont change its appearance. Right click on your desktop etc, then go to the "Appearance" tab and then into the "Effects" button. Un-tick "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:" or change its setting in the drop down list to "Standard". Click OK to get back to the Appearance tab and then click apply in the Display Properties dialog. You should hopefully see a change on the text labels of the Icons on your desktop. If you do, then try IE7, hopefully you'll have a change there as well.

If no change, put't kettle on and make a brew instead, :think:

(All this assumes you have XP, if your running Vista, I'll have to play with my Vista PC instead and see what it does instead)

I don't have these problems as I use Firefox.

Got IE 8 with Vista...never had a problem with it....don't listen to these old men.....they want IE 1 back....they are from a golden era mate....

That's far from true Tony.. we want IE6 to stay.. that's all ;-) There is an alternative.. for M$ to make the newer IE's work correctly with what is still a current OS

Too true Dave....I know its not easy for peeps to move out and onwards from comfort areas and it is just a case of what you used too....i too was just teasing a tad....
