I use this site for live tracking in North America and rather than it being for a fixed location you can select either the aircraft reg/flight number, airline name or airport code to search for live tracks.

Yes, I have found that site very useful in a practical sense. I had to pick my daughter up from Dulles (KIAD) last Sunday and used flightaware to track her flight from Istanbul via Frankfurt. Once her flight reached the far north of Canada I could follow the flight in Google Earth via a link in flightaware which downloads the necessary .kmz file. Keeping in mind that all those flight trackers have a delay of several minutes, when she was over Pennsyvania, I monitored the Potomac Approach and Dulles Tower ATC on the internet. I heard her flight cleared to land and knew it was time to leave for the airport to pick her up!

It is interesting to use Google Earth because you not only see the flight you are following and its track, but also nearby flights. Coverage outside of North America is spotty, as Gary has mentioned. I knew my daughter's flight had tracked over Leeds and the Isle of Mann but then it vanished until reaching Canada.
