Gary.. have a look at this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytTyAdduPzY

I cut it to a little over 2mins and the titles are a bit long winded but it will give you a good idea of how they sound 'on the move' :) When PEP goes past and you hear the engine note drop.. she's actually having the throttles opened (it's a peculiarity of the system) which you then hear when the b1oody fire truck has sped off! :)

Gary,

You said you didn't remember the Belfast making thats sound... so, by implication, do you remember the Belfast? Did you have any access to it, drawings / plans / photos etc? I was trying to get info from a guy I met who used to work at Shorts (He was the cheif engineer on the 330) but the guy he knew on Belfasts passed away so he couldn't get the info. :(

The Vanguard is my earliest memory of aeroplanes bigger than Chipmunks, one which is treasured and, mental health permitting,I will never forget....pure excitement.

I'm glad and heartened that I have been able to contribute to keeping those memories virtually alive.

BTW I made the panel and sounds ;) albeit those in the video are rather old versions.

Nicely done though mate

cheers

I don't think anyone had said anything to the contrary mate but no harm in reiterating who did what ;) It is true to say that without the panel and sounds, the model and paints would just be another model and paints but with them, we have a complete package ;)

I just had a quick look at a section of this DVD (which I can recommend) and there is no smoke to be seen. It has a nice shot of G-APES taking off and climbing away which looks a bit like your video sequence. Good comparison material.
Due to shortages and cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off.

Hi Jelle :hello:

Yes.. that's a cracking DVD and one that I also endorse ;) I have some footage of AJAX doing her 'thing' at Woodford in the early 80's and she, unusually, is smoking a little. That said, Vanguards/Merchantmen were not really setup for doing airshows and the rather spirited display probably accounted for it.. along with the fact that by this time, she was already 20years old ;) That's the only instance I know of a 'slightly' smokey Vanguard :)

I know that clip Dave and thats the only smoke I've seen too.

I saw lots of Vanguards and Merchantmen in normal operations and never saw one smoke :)

Back in the halcyon days when I was in BIA Ops, our 1-11s smoked (20 B & H a day  )....nothing new there. However, it was noticeably heavier as the engines approached TBO and the oil seals were getting worn. Perhaps something simlar with Tynes??????
