I made a rather jolly response to this post earlier only to find the forum had dropped. Needless to say, I'm not doing it again

If your main sim is FS9, there really is only one choice and if you dabble in FSX from time to time, the Alpha model will port over painlessly. The only thing I notice in FSX is that the float switches don't show in the VC but that's a minor problem and an easy work around. Also.. you don't need a 2 week groundschool and extensive flight program just to start the engines

Does the Alphasim Catalina have a sound set included in the package?

Hi AD..

I'm not 100% sure but I think it defaults to the DC3. There's no mention of a soundset at Alphasim and looking at the sounds on mine.. I think I must have changed them for FSX and dropped the T6 Texan soundset in. I'll look on my old pc to see what's on there ;)

EDIT..
NO AD.. it doesn't come with a soundset. The sound folder contains a cfg file which aliases to either the default DC3 or (remmed out) the Ford Trimotor ;)

I guess there is a suitable soundset on avsim or flightsim. Will have a look later on today.

If you own any of the MAAM-SIM DC3s or the R4D then you would be able to download free from their site, the MAAM-SIM XC-47C...This is the rare amphibious version of the DC3...It comes with an absolutely magnificent sound set which includes water sounds as well as superb engine starting and running sounds that would be perfect for the Catalina.

If you don't have the MAAM-SIM DC3 or R4D then that is an omission on your part as it is one of the very finest aircraft ever built for Flight Simulator :agree:

I have looked at the MAAM DC3 but have wondered if it contained a clickable virtual cockpit.

If you update it fully then the MAAM-SIM DC3 does have a fully clickable virtual cockpit...However, they never actually updated the Amphibian model with this clickable VC...As I never fly from a VC and only use them to view, it does not matter to me, I do just pop into the VC and adjust the view to something spectacular and admire how it looks but if I want to do anything it is SHFT+S and back to work in the real cockpit :)

BTW...I was not suggesting that you use its Panel for your Cat...I was just saying that if you had it, you could use its superb sound set and even its "Cranky old bird" smoke effects for your engine starting :agree:

All I was meaning that it would have to have clickable VC before I would buy it. I wouldn't even try and put the panel from the MAAM DC3 to the Catalina.
