Strange how liveries can generate such diverse reactions! Personally, I disliked the "red tail" (or "Carnaby Street") livery with a passion, I thought it garish, boring, old fashioned and hideous, especially compared to the predecessor BOAC and BEA liveries which were much better and contemporary. I quite liked Landor despite being even more "boringly British" but it could look very dull and I recall boarding a rather shabby BA "EuroGatwick" (Dan-Air in drag) 737 in Naples parked next door to an Alitalia MD83 and remember that despite being nearly 30 years old, the Alitalia livery still seemed fresh and in spite of Alitalia's usual lack of attention to presentation, managed to look more presentable than the rather dour and grubby BA 737 which was probably cleaner in reality.
However my preferred BA livery - fingers in ears as I know what you will all think of it - was the "World Tails" version of the current identity which managed to avoid the all over white whale look most airlines have gone for, and seemed creative, inclusive and confidently British, in that we could say "This is British Airways and we don't need to plaster the Union Flag all over the place to be proudly British". Let's face it, Lufthansa don't have the German flag on their aircraft tails as a logo, nor do the Dutch feel the need to paint KLM in Royal Orange yet they are two of the most successful airlines in Europe. BOAC never had the Union Flag draped over their tails and yet carried Britain and British values around the world, so I happen to think it is not necessary to have the flag literally carried on what used to be called the "flag carrier". Particularly if it results in the hideous Red Tail livery!

I think the best recent livery is the BMI one, something a bit different that looked very fresh when it came out.... but yes, I'd have Golden Speedbird and BEA Red Square any day of the week
