Re: Installing Mesh

Hi Dave :hello: Just one more question regarding mesh, many say that it should be installed above other certain files (cannot remember which ones) so should I just leave mine as they are or should I restore the original ones and try with the folders once again to place them in some sort of order in the add scenery list? My own thoughts are leave it as it is as the mesh is working but unsure which is the best way to play this.

Nigel.

Hi Nige :hello:

Well.. everything should have a position (it's own if possible) in the order of things as this is how FS works.. from the ground up as they say. I can't remember off the top of my head where the default mesh for Europe would be.. it could be EurW though there's nowt obvious there and likewise, there is nothing obvious in Sc/Wo/Sc to show European mesh either. What you don't want is one mesh conflicting with another but without exact knowledge of where each is, this is difficult to guard against.
For now, you might as well leave em where they are and see how it goes. If you start getting terrain errors or FS kicking off where it hasn't before.. then a rethink is in order. It does seem a bit wild to leave them to their own devices but if the sim is running fault free.. then I'd be happy to leave it at that. I take it the files are easily identifiable (unique bgl names) so if it starts playing up.. you can pull em at a moments notice or.. reinstate your backup.. being careful to note any new files you may have added in the meantime :)

Hi Dave, my thoughts were along your lines but as I'm having trouble with the add scenery menu and the folder not being picked up by FS I kinda threw caution against the wind.

No problem with the files as all I have to do is delete the whole lot and re-install the World/Scenery files back in place - I have the mesh files stored on a DVD so might very well try what Peter suggested, create 2 folder one being Textures then see if it is picked up on add scenery. Got nothing to lose really, just a case of backing up and backing up.

Nigel.

Hi Nige..

It may be something as silly as there being no texture folder present. Why some sceneries need one albeit an empty one and others don't is and will probably always be a mystery. I should have mentioned it in my first post but it's one of those things you just do without thinking  Should you retry it.. make sure you restart the sim and let the cfgs rebuild on each occassion. You're much less likely to encounter an error that way ;)

I'm reminded why I don't delve into this sort of thing :worried:

So easy to mesh it up

Sceneries of the Landclass type must NOT have an empty "texture" folder as it will cause a "memory leak"...Looking at my files, it would appear that that rule applies also to scenery of the Mesh type...The few that I have do NOT have the empty "texture" folder.

Hi Peter and Dave :hello:

Peter, tried your suggestion of putting in a Texture Folder alongside the Scenery Folder as per your instructions and hey presto FS9 recognised the Mesh Scenery so that I could put it in the add senery area though presently I am leaving the mesh in where it is as it is working OK with no problems. Should any arise which is now doubtful I will do as you suggested Peter. I flew a low level sortie in the Meteor through the mountainous regions of Switzerland and unfortunately spent too much time looking at the contours of the mountains whilst flying through the valleys I failed to notice the ground rise up with a set of trees on the top......Ooooops!!

Again, very many thanks for your help on this. :welldone:

Kind regards
Nigel.
