Or even looking up from the desk to see what was happening the other side of the office.

Wife has varifocals and no problem from Day 1 - I couldn't get on with them and even had them remade. Still no joy but fortunately on a "money-back" guarantee. So two pairs returned (special offer!) and £650 better off (found the old receipt this week and couldn't believe how much I paid the optician).

And now I work from home almost all of the time so no office and the presentations are on a PC on my desk.
Your brain has to do some remarkable things to transition you to varifocals and a signifant number of people are unable to do it. My first pair took about 10 days for my brain to make the transition. When I put the glasses on the first time I noticed a lot of perspective distortion...all circular things became elliptical and all square and rectangular things became trapesiums. My car dashboard became "Dished" away from me. Ten days later I suddenly noticed that ALL these faults had gone away and my brain had made the transition. Furthermore, if I reverted briefly to my previous bifocals my brain instantly accepted them without any distortion and then back to varifocals instantly again showed no distortion of perspective...Amazing thing the brain! :agree:

I have varifocals with what I call photchronic lenses. Set me back a couple of hundred smackaroos at Dand A. However never had a problem adjusting to them. SWMBO tried them and could not use them. Mainly because she insists on those marrow little glasses. Now she wears glasses for reading and the rest of life is a blur. Vanity eh!

During the exam I wore a magnifcent set of spectacles. The lenses were round and the frames accommodated several of them so I was able to see well closeup and far away. I said this is what I need; thanks and see ya later. ... no dice :worried:

I hope my progressive set are as good as those.

Derek we seam to have a few things in common, wood crafting, RVs. ... general grumpiness

I tried to get on with them over a couple of months! Trouble was they got in the way of normal life. They were never as good as my "distance" glasses - more like looking through a tunnel with the edges missing which baffled the optician. And close up, things were never in focus. I wondered if it was the range over which I needed glasses and hence varifocals were not suitable:

6 foot to infinity - glasses needed
reading - glasses needed in poor light

Since most of my life is spent with everything in a 6 foot radius (TV and driving are the exceptions), the varifocals had to only cope with extremes. Therefore the glasses had to somehow cope only with very near and far away - so most of it could be clear glass?

My wife, however, needs glasses for everything so perhaps varifocals were optimal.

I guess a lot depends on your eyesight as to what is worthwhile going for and what is a red herring. I have a slight astigmatism in both eyes with near being the problem area. With me working (mostly) in the kitchen, it wasn't necessary for me to wear 'near sighted' glasses all of the time.. they'd get in the way for one! So.. an option was to go for reading glasses and possibly a-n-other pair to cover the area just outside 'normal' reading or.. cover the lot in one go with varifocals. The bottom bit of mine is for reading.. the centre bit covers the transition out of reading and the top is clear. Much as I dislike wearing glasses, at least I don't have to keep taking them off for everything outside arms length and a little beyond :) Like dentures.. you get used to them eventually
