I saw the video from the air of the wave coming in (carrying a large ship) and the cars moving up the road in it's path..... I was was wrenched
I know we aren't suppsed to get emotional , but ...... what longing I had for them that they would make it - knowing full well they were a moment from death....

:((

it happens all the time around the world , people dying , it's ... well, what can words do to express the sorrow.

This looks like something from 65 years ago. What a catastrophe.

Yes, that was very disturbing to watch. :(( I could only pray that the people who lived in those homes, or worked in those buildings, received some kind of warning and were able to flee before that wave went through. Horrible...just horrible.

It's an awful situation and now there's been a massive (conventional) blast at one of the atomic power plants

I looked up on the web as I had seen no reports of the effect of the Tsunami elsewhere. However on the west coast of America it caused damge at Klamath California. According to Reuters the waves were about 8 feet high.1 person is missing believed drowned. He was apparantly swept out to sea with two friends when they went down to take photos of it coming ashore. I will refrain from any comment. My sympathy goes to his family it was an unecessary waste of a life. Fortunately his two friends managed to swim back.

Looked at the video of the fire. terrible. The houses are mainly wood and thinner combustable material like a sort of paper, so I was told. This was why the B29 fire raids were so devastating in WW2. Also they probably cannot stand up to the power of the tsunami either.

Found out today that one of my colleagues had been in Tokyo last week for a holiday. She and her husband flew out of Tokyo about 2 hours before the earthquake struck so very lucky.

They knew nothing about the events they had left behind until the captain announced it as they touched down in the UK. They were allowed to use their mobile phones on the way to the gate to contact families. Her mother had a very sleepless night while they flew home unaware.

Reading the news reports, seems like Tokyo today is very different from the Tokyo they had enjoyed last week - power cuts, shortage of supplies. But nothing like the scenes further north.

Found this picture after reading about the clean up operation.

If ever there was a country so well prepared for dealing with a disaster of this magnitude, then Japan is it.
