Here's another of the set I have..



Difficult to say if this shows the surrounding area any better than some of the others but what it does show is the condition of the outer skin.. well, what hasn't disappeared inside.

Looking at the background on this aircraft, it's had several heavy landings and multiple problems with corrosion unique to this airplane. However, none of the corrosion listed was aft of the mid part of the aft cargo bay, several feet ahead of the damage area.

However, the heavy landings also suggest it's possible there was more than one heavy landing, as a result, I'd not be surprised if the damage was from that. Apparently there were enough heavy landings that in 2000, they found 5 major cracks in a section of the Keel Beam and had to replace it.

It looks like the aircraft again went through C-Check in June and corrosion was found around the wing root and forward cargo bay, but no mention (yet) of the hole in the tail has been reported to the FAA.

BTW, if you want to look up the history of any US-registered airliner, go to www.myairplane.com, click on "Aircraft BG Investigation" and then type in the tail number (sans the leading "N") and check all the boxes on the right. It'll give you a full run down of everything that's ever been reported to the FAA or NTSB regarding accidents, incidents, and repairs.

Yup.. I had a quick look at this aircrafts background when I received the pictures and yes.. it hasn't had the most gentle of lives! Some of the 'dinks' it's had look quite severe but nontheless.. it was repaired and put back in service. One could say it's a testimony of just how strong these old girls are. It'll be interesting to learn what happens to her now though.
