Ben
I know you're doing your best to help me with utmost good intentions.
But that's not the answer I'm looking for at the moment .

Well,
There is a problem detected and windows shut down to prevent damage to "Said" computer
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
But, how can this be the PC was running fine before the format.?
Ohhh

Disks are a black art mate. Was it a quick format or a full one? Its possible there were lots of bad areas on the disk for years, but if the data that was stored there was never accessed, you'd never know. When you format the drive and it starts writing data onto the areas that were actually damaged, you can end up stuffed. I remember having a motherboard that ate drives, it turned out it was the board that was faulty, I just though I was really unlucky

Hi Ben,
I tried reinstalling windows but got a message I should check to make sure the drive I was attempting to install windows on, was connected.
Burgers!
Tell you the truth I'm glad it happened. If I'd turned the laptop over, I'd have gotten the reward
No good deed goes unpunished.
So do I buy a HHD and gamble the mobo is good.

Any program I can run from the dvd drive to test it?
Thanks for your time Ben.
... and Dave B.

Hi Joe, no worries. Your board will be fine if its a laptop board. Mine was a desktop board and I'd over tightened one of the screws when I was mounting it, so my own fault really. A new drive should be grand mate.

Hi Dave,
with XP being only supported untill April 2014 and the PC having only a P4 2.66 I wouldn't put more than 30 dollars into it. (not counting my precious and very valuable time)
The other issue Ben has scared me with is the possible MoBo being bad.
So untill I can rule that out. the answer to your question is " I have no idear"... yet.
However, if the MoBo is ok and I get a HHD for 30 bucks I'll do it. The person I'm giving it to will be using it mostly for ebay-ing. and watching you tube. email and connecting to a online automotive repair website.
Like I said, when I had it running with all the updates, it was a pretty fast machine as far as above said usage.
fingers crossed.

I don't know how I missed your post Ben.
Sounds good . It was a quickie . because hey, who can refuse a quickie?
Dave
scratch what I was saying about waiting for Bens reply.
I just got done fixing a Town Cars' blower Fan and Speed control. A pain in the katushka that was.
So I'm too tired to edit the previous message.
Cheers to you fine Gents.

Hi Joe
That's what I meant by is it viable. Indications are that it IS the disc and not the mobo but hey.. shit happens. If you can get a drive for $30.. I'd be inclined to give it a go as that laptop is far more powerful than the one I'm using at this very moment and this one is fine for browsing.. that sorta crap

It's a 1.73gig CeleronM running Vista with 2gig of ram. Vista isn't helping but I CBA to put XP on it.. it came with Vista installed

Did you ever find the china mug you were after Joe?
