It was a year before I was born so I'm hardly likely to remember it.

It would be nice to have the link from your wife
Here you go: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/ ... 00961.html

The last article at the bottom of the page.

It took place 5 days before I was born. The Flight extract being published on the day I was born.

The point was to guess the a/c purely from the illustration

I don't think anyone has mentioned Magister, the teacher character on the left.

Ahh yes it could well be (having Googled the definition of the word). I thought it might have been a 'Tutor' but then thought 1956 might have been too early for one.

I am still puzzled by the furry creature under the gladiator's arm. It's hard to tell just what sort of animal it is.

Maybe Paul will put us out of our misery by providing the answers before too long.

Well I thought seeing as Garry listed Tutor, and scored 5.5/7, that character with the mortar board may be a (Miles) Master.
I've also re-thought my suggestions and now suggest Monarch instead of Viscount. does that give me minus points like on QI?

EDIT Like you and others, Larry, that weird thing under the Gladiator has me foxed. The Hedgehog suggestion was not confirmed or denied. :dunno:
2nd EDIT I've calculated that Garry was correct with Tutor, so I must withdraw Master
3rd EDIT Also Master is not even in my reference book. :$ :$

I'll post the answers late on Sunday.
A couple of clues though

1 The 'teacher's' first name is Percival.

2. The 'Hedgehog' wouldn't be a fan of Barnes

Paul ;)
