He wasn't being reckless, just following orders.
One would like to think that ultimately, the Captain had the final decision on whether conditions were suitable or not. He'd have been the one in the sh1t had he failed to unstick. That said, it was a Ruskie so perhaps mon Kapitan had a political commisar sat next to him with a pistol pointed at his head *-) I thought they stopped that sort of thing when the wall came down :dunno:
