Re: News: Frankenstorm - Stay safe nigelb
It is now 5:30 GMT here. Can't really sleep since I am fearing a tree falling on the house or the basement flooding, but chin up, I hope not! Windy but not as bad as initially feared with some gusts around 60 mph versus the 80-90 mph winds some predicted. Incessant rain, but hey, I was born in the UK, although I can't ever remember rain as heavy there. So far power is still on and I consider myself lucky because many have lost power. The line in my neighborhood are all underground but many places have above ground power lines and with the wind and rain there are lots of falling trees. Of course, if an above ground trunk line goes, we still loose power. Effects of Sandy will be around for a few days but should diminish greatly by Tuesday evening. An unusual feature for a former hurricane (now ropical storm), the backside of the storm is causing heavy snow in West Virginia! It has turned a lot colder, even here. I think New York City and New Jersey are getting far worse so far and I am sure that will be on your news there.
Gary is certainly right about Hati and other locations that have been hit in the Caribeean, either in this storm or past storms. They do not have the resources to deal with disasters like we do here and I can't imagine even riding out a routine thunderstorm in a tin shack.
All ok so far!

Great to see that you're holding your own Nigel.
After all the news reports tonight I'm almost afraid to see what the morning will reveal.
A member of our department at Southwest recently moved to New York City to work at the LaGuardia airport. Yesterday (Monday) was to be her first day.
I hope your good fortune continues Nigel.

All the best NIgel. From the photos and videos that are appearing on UK news sites this morning, it looks like a heck of a storm.
Re: News: Frankenstorm - Stay safe nigelb
According to the BBC' News website 13 people have lost their lives so far.it seems that flooding and loss of electricity are causing more problems than the wind itself, although that is bad.Hope it soon starts to abate Nigel.EricT

Subways are flooded and the ere was flashes and sparks as power substations etc were taken out...makes you wonder if you could get electrocuted in the water if too close.
It's as well they took precautions and warned and evacuated well in advance

Our power has been up and down more often than a pair of prostitute's knickers over the past 18 hours or so. The longest we've been without power was about 6 hours from 04:30 to 10:30 local time today.
It's still windy but not as bad as the overnight hours where all you could hear was the wind howling through the trees and the occasional creaking of the house as it was buffeted by the gusts. We lost at least one large fir tree in our street (thankfully it fell onto the owner's lawn and not his house or car) and a large fallen tree has blocked the main road to the next town.
There has been at least one reported death in Toronto due to the storm, a poor woman was hit by a flying street sign as she was crossing a street in the city.

Glad you've faired well Larry
It seems a lot of the deaths thus far have been caused by falling street signage or bits off buildings. Been trying to keep up with what my cousin is supposed to be up to. Her flight from Hawaii to SFO won't be a problem and last time I checked, her flight from SFO to Dulles was still showing as sheduled. I believe United have told them to carry on as normal and turn up when they should. NE of Washington still looked ropey
