WOW!!

OK, no surprises that it's 50 years...except now it actually happened and I think back to being a young boy and the VC 10 was new, it was just going into service by the time I could make sense of things and it really was the future.

I seriously remember that the 707 was the really big thing with facts published at every opportunity but it was just a modern aeroplane without propellers.

The VC 10 was different, very different and to us seemed to be the true future and the true step between the Britannia and Buck Rogers.

I'm trying to build pages for all of the VC10s but now that their 50th anniversaries are coming around I've got the added challenge (self-induced of course) of getting them online around these anniversaries.

It is written by Richard King, the Captain on that last flight, and he told this story last June at the 'VC10 at 50' event at Brooklands. He kindly gave me permission to use it on my site as well and let me use some of his photos from his time with the Royal Flight of Oman.

I remember talking a BUA/BCAL engineer who was one of the first to get a VC10 type licence and he said that after a two day ARB grilling on the a/c he thought he would be made for life with a VC10 ticket on his Engineers Licence.

Speaking of BUA, I uploaded a small piece of video which shows air to air footage of a BUA VC10 (G-ARTA). This was scanned from Super 8 film which was most likely sold on board the aircraft.

Glad you like it! Anything more you can tell us about it? It has suffered a bit from age, the colour obviously has faded quite a bit, but the images are great. I'm deducing that it was sold on board from the 'duty paid' sticker on the box and the text on the back, but that's all I know about it.

I can't you anything more about I'm afraid - I borrowed from a chap in the sheet metal/detail shop when I was in there as part of my apprenticeship at BCAL.

On what is almost the last day of 2012 I've got something which is very relevant for this anniversary year in which we celebrated G-ARTA's first flight: the story of that day as told by Jock Bryce. This article was written by him in 1978 for the Sunday Express. He talks about the preparations for that first flight and how he decided on landing at Wisley instead of Boscombe Down as was originally planned.

I've heard the same rumour... it certainly seems likely that the VC10 will fly on until September or October.
