That's a fine shot Peter  I note the 'sea dog' standing close by too ;) Thank goodness those blouses were changed in my day. They were still made of the same material (I presume) which itched like stink but the advent of zips meant it wasn't a fight to get them on or off anymore. ;) I'll see if I can zoom in on the name of your grandad's ship and try to find a pic. You mention it being a trawler but I'm guessing it's primary job was more likely mine sweeping.
I was surprised to see the ships name on his cap talley but can't remember now if wartime use of just 'HMS' was used in the first war.

A simple family shot but lots of interesting bits. Thanks for posting it Peter ;)

That's a brilliant photo Peter. Reminds me very much of my daughter when getting her photo taken. Thanks very much for posting :)

nearest I can find after a quick search:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Riviera

and more than just a trawler if correct!

edit: you Navy types - would there have been a Riviere and a Riviera at the same time? Can only find Riviere in WW2

Hi Ian..

I did a long search and that's all I could find too. Unfortunately, the Lloyds Register has a hole from something like 1898-1930 which is as helpful as it gets 8)

Edit: not interested in things floating on the sea but like a challenge!

I'd found that but presumed it wasn't the correct one. No way could that be considered a trawler

Dave,

Agreed. But unless there was Riviere and a Riviera at the same time, memories from 100 years ago can become jumbled.

It wasn't a "warship" in the traditional sense (a car ferry). And maybe there was some secrecy around the conversion to carry seaplanes.

All conjecture of course.
