Peter,
Regarding replacing your C Drive with an SSD. I did this earlier on in the year and it is really simple. My new SSD came from Crucial and I ordered it with the transfer kit. Basically you plug the new SSD in to the PC with the cable supplied and then put the CD on and follow the instructions. Result is a clone of your original Drive; you then replace the old Drive with the new SSD - you should have been supplied with a mounting adapter - and the old HD can be used as a back up until you are sure all is well. The PC treats the cloned SSD as if it is the original HD.
It really is a seamless change-over. Have a look at the Crucial site and see what they offer kit-wise, being lazy I opted for an all-in pack with SSD, transfer kit and mounting base but you can choose whatever you like depending on your computing knowledge and ability.
Hope this helps.

Yes that does help, but I can't quite do it that way as my present C: drive is a partition on a 1 TB drive...The other partitions being F:, G:, and H: (D: and E: are CD and DVD drives). I: is a virtual drive with the FS9 virtual disc 4 in it. So basically I'm hoping to just plug in the new SSD drive and let my Windows XP automatically allocate J: to it. The SSD drive will have nothing on it and I don't know if I will have to Format it...Did you have to Format yours or did it come ready formatted?
The plan then would be to BOOT into the Windows7 DVD and install Windows7 into the new SSD (J:) drive
The boot.ini file would then see two boot up drives and offer me the choice of booting on C: or J: ...WindowsXP or Windows7
The SSD drive will be 240GBs so it would not be able to do the cloning of 1TB and really it would suit me to have my old FS9 on WindowsXP and I would be able to install the new P3D v2 into any other drive seen by Windows7 (F:, G: or H:)...I would probably clean out H: to empty it for anything I wanted to install and run in Windows7. Window7 and WindowsXP would each keep their separate registries on their own drives (C: and J:) and only see stuff that was relevant to them in drives F:, G: and H:

Hi Peter,
I haven't had a lot of time free at the moment. You typically wouldn't format the SSD in XP. When you put in the windows 7 DVD, you will need to point it at the SSD. It will install two partitions, a 300MB (it might be 100MB on win7 - can't remember) Master Boot Record partion, and then the partition for the Win7 OS. The Win 7 OS WILL BE THE MASTER, you will then need to configure the boot menu from within Windows 7 to provide you the option to boot to the existing XP install. It will NOT work the other way around unless you use a separate boot loader program.
If I do get some more time over the next few weeks I'll try and provide a more detailed and helpful response.

I understand what you are doing but I am no techie, computing-wise I can just about tie my own shoe laces

I have P3D on my SSD as the sole occupant and manage to get very good start-up and frame rates so I'm happy with that.
When you do add your SSD let us know how it goes.
