Actually, the Thompson Dock hasn't been in use for many years now, although I saw a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey in it during the Belfast Film Festival last autumn!Garry Russell wrote:Indeed Brian![]()
The fitting out basin is still in use...that's where they used to add the machinery, funnels and winglets![]()

Re: RMS Olympic building and Launch
Thanks so much for posting this: I'd seen quite a bit of it before but it's so well cut together and the music and sounds really help bring it to life. I spend six months a year working on Queen's Island and pass by the old H&W yards every morning. What a sight it must have been back then.

I think it must have been the same for anyone growing up in the vicinity of a big shipyard or aircraft factory. I remember Seillean being built at Harlands for BP in the late 80's. It was an incredible sight. Having been to the discovery museum in Newcastle, i got a real sense of the same sort of feelings on Tyneside as the yards here turned out some fantastic ships. Shorts did build anything as big when i was a kid, but i remember the likes of tge Tucano and 360 /330 / sherpa doing test circuits over our house and it was great. As a kid I always wanted my dad to take a transfer over to England to be near an RAF fighter station.
Oh to be a kid then
Ben.
