I actually worked for Cunard Eagle at Heathrow 50 years ago, and I recall working on the DC6.

Hi,

An interesting article but we are not surprised on this Forum are we?, In June 1994, Airbus announced its plan to develop its own very large airliner, designated the A3XX and i followed this though to the A380's first flight but of course our Goverment now and Goverments back then and back to after World War 2 will not get their act together regarding aviation in this country.

We know what should happen but they Pussy Foot around talking instead of doing!! they knew what was coming as soon as the as the A380 made it's first flight but did nothing about it so now it's bit them on you know where!

I am sure in time that Gatwick will be A380's main airport in the SE of England as Emirates are flying in every day but i will wait and see, just my two pennies ;)

I'd argue it's not up to the government to deal with infrastructure issues at the UK's airports, it's up to the the owners of those airports. In the case of the A380 it may have been a complete sales flop, a la Concorde, in which case they would have made lots of changes at great expense for no use, after all how much airline expertise do you think the government actually has?
The government provides the legal environment that can affect the infrastructure provision but that also provides protection for others affected by the issue. Frankly no sane person would put the UK's major London airports where they are if they had the choice as it's too difficult to expand without impacting thousands of voters in the surrounding area.
