Our local supermarket had Christmas puddings and cakes on the shelf last week. Buy now and beat the rush. :agree:

Just been in the local garden center, & they've got their Christmas display out.

Elite Dangerous beta 2 is due out on Tuesday

Interesting, Dave. At the moment my head is swimming with data overload on Elite D. As if it isn't enough, trying to take in all the info on YouTube, then the stuff on the website, the manual (which is quite impressive, considering it's early beta status) and now the huge amount of stuff in the forums, I can feel a major headache coming on!

Problem for me is that I struggle with my eyesight (compliments of Reiter's Syndrome and "UVitis") when reading on the PC screen. That's why I have a huge amount of printed stuff in my hobby room - 3 bookcases and 5 boxes full - even though I only read most of it once and put it away!

Oh well, I suppose the most important things will fall into place once I've had the game a few weeks. I can't wait now, though! :excited:

It's even worse now!

I was given permission to buy it now - so I will wait for Beta 2 and install that to save any unnecessary issues.

I can't believe how many tutorials there are on YouTube (and happily, most are Brits, too!) and have downloaded umpteen pdf guides. This is going to be very taxing for an old duffer like me! *-)

I found a group on the forum that does PvE only and no messing around, so that may :help:

I usually fly in online solo mode, so you don't get the ejits who think it's fun to sit outside a station and pick off anyone emerging, although I think this will be clamped down on
Do bear in mind though, any progress you make will be wiped when the game goes gamma before full release, so just consider this to be practice & don't get hung up on making lots of money yet. ;)
It's fairly easy to get the hang of, I don't think I actually read any manuals. I've got most commands assigned to joystick buttons, and combined with TrackIR works pretty well.

Thanks - I had planned on doing solo, but when I saw that a group had been created for PvE only (i.e. no shooting other players) with the emphasis on helping new pilots, I thought it wasn't a bad idea.

I've read the main gist, so I was aware of progress being annulled, but I'm used to that, as I'm using several programs and games in alpha or beta stage and to be honest, it doesn't really bother me, when I know it's going to happen at some stage.

I'm wondering how large an install it is, though - I just downloaded the 13MB installer, but I've been unable to find anywhere how big the main prog is, or how long it takes to install (on average), which is unhelpful, but I suppose I'll just have to start it up and see. :dunno:

At least this will drag me away from the 7 Days To Die alpha, which I have been completely addicted to over the last two months, for some reason. :wasntme:

I'm at work at the moment :worried: but I can check my installation size later if you like. Of course beta 2 will probably be a bit bigger as there is some new stuff in there. I expect the servers will be quite busy tomorrow, so downloading may be slower than normal. From memory it's not that big, in comparison to P3d say. Doubt if it will take you long if the servers are up to it. :)

Not really looked into groups myself, but that one sound like a good idea.

Hi Dave

I succumbed :$

It's just over 2.3GB - took about 5 minutes to install. I've had my first flight and set up basic controls. The set-up is a little confusing (I mean the layout of the assignments GUI) but I seem to be able to fly okay with my G940. It's a shame it doesn't seem to recognise more than two controllers, though - that's my stick and throttle. My rudder pedals, MFDs and UFC are not recognised. It would be great to be able to use them, but it looks like I'm going to have to make a profile for Voice Activated Commands instead.

I have profiles for most sims, but rarely use them as it means having to wear a headset all the time. Oh well, not much choice, I guess.

I also got all the guides and so-on, but both of my printers are playing up, right in the middle of printing the most important info. Grrrr.

The group I joined is called The Mobius Group. There are lots of posts from people expressing how happy they are with it and its policies, so it shouldn't be a problem for me. My profile name is, as always, Brixmis - so if you do ever venture into multiplayer do wave as you warp past me!

Dave, how are you controlling your craft?

I'm using the G940, but have separate pedals - the G940 is recognised, but not the pedals (nor my other controllers). I have posted about it, but I see several paople have similar issues - but other's haven't any problems.

Of course, it's beta, but still, it really messes with your head when you want to yaw and have to use a dial or slider to do it :S

I use a Thrustmaster Warthog. I've got a button set up to toggle the stick between roll and yaw. Bit of a pain, but it's not too bad when you get used to it. Also set up a 4-way hat on the throttle for the directional thrusters.
