Hi Mike,

The one in your link is on Etna in Sicily not Vesuvius near Naples. I've done some checking and the funicular railway up Vesuvius wasn't rebuilt. Instead in was replaced with a chair lift.

Here's a video of the ascent of Vesuvius, the first part is normal railway then the funicular railway which first opened in 1880. http://youtu.be/zF8pFt8YBW8

Yes, realised that, just a light note that there are plenty more where that came from. There are dozens listed around the world, funicular relating to the means of power, being a fixed engine dragging a cable. I was surprised to see that this actually includes chairlifts, on account of that propulsion method.
