Goodness, where does all that detail come from ? My grandfather was sunk twice in WW1, both times in the South Atlantic, and eventually was interned in Montevideo, from which he escaped by the simple expedient of taking the ferry across the River Plate to Buenos Aires !

There are several sources of info. including the National Archive.
You might do a quick check from this list, then dig further:

Naturally, that won't help if a U Boat wasn't involved, but there are other lists of UK, US etc ships damaged or sunk, how attacked and so on.
Depending on how much time you have, it's a sad fact that war records are remarkably detailed. I've seen articles saying that xyz aircraft, no.******, piloted by ABC, was shot down by DEF flying zzz at 14:17, over PLACE.

Mike. Thank you for that. I shall start looking. He was with the Johnston Warren line at the time, which was a prominent transporter of meat from Argentina to the UK at the time . I know I have his discharge books ,or at least some of them , somewhere, so I may be able to find the ships' identities

Chris, you may find his name in crew lists, and that could lead to ship names.
btw, I've been using "DuckDuckGo" instead of Google to find things over the last couple of days, comes up with some different results.
Several ships in this list were from that line, a handful being sunk by enemy action:

Mike : thank you again. Looking at that list, I think it must have been the Johnston line at the time, as the merger with Warren didn't take place until after WW1. I shall keep looking

I don't know if you're aware of www.uboat.net . It concentrates mainly on WW2 but there's also a WW1 section. If you have the ship name and approximate dates.. you should be able to find out which Uboat was on the 'dealing' end and where the incident took place

One of my first ships - the smaller one on the right, that is. She was the steam turbine tanker Halia, and she is seen here during salvage operations on the Pacific Glory, which had been in collision and caught fire. This was in 1970 - my first trip on her was in 1976.
