DaveB : I agree with you totally about Monty Python, which tended more to satire than silliness, and which usually was very funny as well . The Goons, however , just never struck a chord with me. As you say, Horses for Courses

Indeed Chris ;)

TBH.. by the time Spike had got to the 'Q' series, he'd already seen his best days. I only ever watched a couple of shows and that was enough. Some shows stand the test of time very well.. Dad's Army springs to mind.. while others were very much of their day and deserve to stay there. Of these, some couldn't even be broadcast today.. Alf Garnett (whatever that show was called) and Love thy Neighbour being two.. and rightly so.

'Till Death Us Do Part', Alf Garnett was played by Warren Mitchell with Dandy Nicholls, Una Stubbs and Anthony Booth. Booth is the father of Cherie Blair which may explain a lot, or not. :)

I agree that 'Love Thy Neighbour' was appalling, but the humour in 'Till Death Us Do Part' was directed at Alf Garnett's own bigotry and narrow-mindedness rather than people of Afro-Caribbean or Asian descent. On the same topic, I recently watched the film 'The Sand Pebbles', for the first time in years. It is set aboard an American gunboat on the Yangtze in the 1920s, and some of the dialogue really made me wince - I won't elaborate, but the slang for Chinese people was quite offensive. Oddly, when watching 'Apocalypse Now', the slang for Vietnamese people doesn't seem to bother me, because the G.I.s out there at the time used that terminology. Maybe American sailors in China in the 1920s also used slang, but in that film it seems unnecessary. Dunno...can't make my mind up.
