What a life he had.
Encouraged to learn to fly and to learn German by Ernst Udet he was studying in Germany when war broke out. He was held by the SS for three days then escorted to the Swiss border. The rest of his life would have been very different had they not let him go. His fluency in German also had a large effect on the course of his career.
RIP
JON

Yes.. they took his money and clothes too although they gave him his car back. When he asked why.. he was told it was because they didn't have spares
A quite extraordinary life

97, better than 67, but still too short for such a man. R.I.P.
btw, for me anyway, unusual sights on that Spitfire photo.

Very sad to hear of this, bought read his book only a couple of months ago and found it to be extremely interesting and informative and one that I will read again soon. It was also interesting to read his account when he interviewed Herman Goring just after the war.
RIP.
Nigel.

I was sorry to hear this too, a great loss to aviation.
There was some great stuff on BBC Radio 4 this morning about him and one thing apparently (allegedly) was as well as his aviation exploits he once rode a motorcycle and sidecar round in a wall of death ride, with a Lion in the passenger seat of the sidecar...
RIP Capt. Eric

One of the lads at SoH posted this youtube link to a programme about him..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEe5ul37Q7g
He describes doing the wall of death to keep his coffers topped up but there's no mention of him doing it with a sidecar attached and occupied by a lion

Hm, I wondered if Radio 4 were imagining it, though the Scotsman newspaper mention it as well Dave...

I wasn't saying it didn't happen.. just that he didn't mention it in that programme. I can't imagine The Scotsman telling porkey pies
