My point was that the drivers didn't appear to know what was happening around them

I can't think the pilot could have made a different decision, it was dark, the motorway was lighted and traffic was lite. If it was daylight landing in a field would have been a better choice but if they were over a major city there may not have been one in range.

I also don't blame the driver, they did not have time to react. I'm just glad nobody was hurt.
