They may be using the Ireland (as in Republic of) rather than Island of. I've heard of Ferguson before, infact there is mention of him in the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum

Think there's a statue of him in Limavady Ben, so I would imagine he comes from round there.

he he, question 2 is er, slightly trick maybe, (but correct),
although the first man to fly an aeroplane in Ireland, he wasn't succesful,
as co-designer/builder of the Ferguson Monoplane, he crashed it on its' first flight.

And Garry is thinking on the right track there..
