I've heard that Jags drop a lot of oil.
Don't know how true that is.
So why mention it?
Buzz off, I'm just trying to help.

The modern Jag diesels are pretty bullet proof and been around long enough now to have proven themselves. The early v8 are leeky, but more in an unsightly way than anything critical. If you are looking at the last body style in the XJ before the current one, they definitely sit higher than the older models, but I'm not sure if that will be high enough for what Ian is looking for. Best way is to go down to your nearest dealer and sit in one, even if you don't buy from him.

Right. Scrap the Jaguar idea. Good call, Mike!

My first check was the Warranty Direct Reliability Guide.

Jaguar brand reliability is poor but if you check the individual rating for the S-type it's way down at the rock bottom with the Range Rover. The best of Midlands engineering!

Why did I suddenly forget why I've had so many years trouble-free motoring with a string of Japanese cars? :dunno: I'll put it down to the drugs

Looks like a Honda Jazz after all that :( Do they come in full leather? :wall:

Ian :)

Audi A6 Ian? My son had one that had full leather & seemed comfortable - he now has a S type 3 litre twin turbo diesel which he prefers to the Audi.
Me - I've a Peugeot 306 estate, but its becoming a little bit on the low side & difficult to get into. Brother in law has a Mitsubishi Outlander, now that seems to be a lot higher to get into & I think has a leather interior.

The difficulty is that the early versions of the smaller cars where sparse on comfort / ride. I think the thing to remember is that it needs to last a year or so. So long as it comes with a years MoT and a warranty you should be ok regardless of what you choose. The usual rule of thumb is that bigger cars are more comfortable and give a more sofa like ride, but then again, how long are you going to spend in it each week for that to be a significant factor. Its a difficult call mate. As I said before (if you can manage it) go down to a car showroom that has a few of the models your thinking about, switch off from the salesman and try them for ease of access / comfort. :)

I had the pleasure of owning a S-Type Jaguar recently. It was a 2.5 V6 SE drove lovely averaged 32mpg (petrol) 6 speed auto with all the bells and whistles. I used to go and just sit in it when I was fed up and sitting in full leather with the superb clocks and build quality it always made feel that maybe this country wasn't so bad after all if it could produce luxury like this :)

I got her cheap as they are expensive to run in that servicing etc can add up. I had her for almost two years in which time she only developed one fault, one of the rear parking sensors failed, trouble was it was the one that needed the bumper off to replace :(

It was the facelift model 2002 with only 65k on the clock and full service history. I was lucky that I found a Jag engineer who did the ten year service which is a biggy who did all that and MOT for £250!!!
Anyway, sadly this year she had to go, reason being the insurance was coming up at £400 (2nd car and I had to build up a new no claims discount for it) tax was going to be another £400 and service was going to be around £150-£200 plus a new set of front pads and discs would not go amiss.
As I bought the car to use at weekends only to take the dearest out on day trips etc , She was diagnosed with bowel cancer about a month before I bought the car which thankfully turned out to be something else entirely.
However now I work every weekend in my part time post retirement life I cant use the car and was only using once a week to go to work to keep it running, so it seemed an expense I could do without. (Saying that I bought a motorbike again to replace it!)
In all a great car which is cheap to buy and as long as its in fine fettle it should be pretty reliable.
The early cars up to 2001 were a bit problematic with suspension, gearbox, and water leaks. This was sorted on the facelift model which is easily identified as it does not have the Jag badge on the bonnet but on the front grill. Plus it has the 6 speed autobox.

Perhaps an old Rolls Royce might fit the frame? :)
