Those are great shots, thanks Pete.

Love the one of the P1127, where they're all deep in thought. Looks like it was all a bit intimidating.
I thought I was looking at Jock Bryce in that one, but I'm not sure.
And check those pristine white flying suits! They make the VC10 look scrufy.

Thanks

Just look at the shine on that Trident - wouldn't have been out of place at Benson! Great shots Pete, thank you

I wasn't going to post any more but as everyone seems to be entranced by the shiny Trident, here are a couple more shots which show off that superb natural metal finish.

Superb colour pics, such a shame they've been hidden for such a long time. Keep 'em coming :)

Ah, now that's an interesting guess, Dave. I thought it might have been Hugh Merewether who had an engine fire in that same aircraft just a couple of weeks later when it was written off, but I'm not sure it's him either. Someone here will know.

You are right regarding Hugh Mereweather's engine fire. It was with XP984 on 19 March 65 and during a dive from 28000 ft the engine failed and caught fire. He made a sucessful emergency landing at Thorney Island and the aircraft flew again on 15 Oct 65.

Hugh received an OBE for his gallantry.

It is now on display at Brooklands.

Sorry, forgot to add that XP984 was built in 1963.

Thanks for that, Scorpius but what you describe is a different incident from the one I'm referring to. The P1127 in the photo is XP972 and the Merewether engine fire/failure incident in this aircraft took place, just a few weeks after these pictures were taken, in October 1962 and, I believe, the aircraft was a write-off.
