Most outlandish/odd Pub name?

Remember drinking in another boozer with an odd name but not in that locale.. 'The Shoulder of Mutton and Cucumbers'. How odd is that! :o

There's a pub in Oxford which is being 're-branded' as a Wetherspoons pub, to become something of a tribute to a local comedy actor - the late great Ronnie Barker. It's to be called.........The Four Candles...(or should that be Fork 'andles?)

There's one called The End Of The World somewhere between the New Forest and Devon...we used to drive past it, but where exactly along the road I can't remember. Hampshire or Dorset, I'm sure.

Four Candles? No!! ....

There's a 'World's end pub on the Royal Mile, although that's more known for the infamous murders connected with it :-(

Deacon Brodie's is another nice one, named of course for the Councillor William Brodie, who was 'respectable' by day, while up to no good at night. Various Mistresses and kids, he was nabbed after a failed raid on a Tax office.

A Glasgow bar I've visited more than once - Jinty McGintie's....

Mind you, there's probably more I've been in I can't remember..... :roll:

There's one in Newcastle-under-Lyme called the 'Hang Man' and it just happens to be located in Gallow's Tree Lane!

Apparently there was indeed a tree used for hangings in that lane in the 17 or 18 hundreds. The 'lane' no longer exists as such as it is one of the major routes beside a housing estate.

There is also a 'Labour in Vain' in Yarnfield in North Staffordshire that has the self same pub sign outside! Small world eh!

Funny, that, I used to live near Rugeley but never saw the one in Yarnfield.

There are "Labour in Vain" s all over the country it seems. One in Oldswinford near Stourbridge had to remove it's sign, whilst there is another in Sussex.

One I'd forgotten from the Black Country which was mentioned elsewhere is the "Struggling Monkey". It's nothing to do with the infamous Hartlepool spy scandal, but apparently a reference to a pit pump (monkey engine) which was a bit crap. There's a "Pig on the Wall" in Gornal which celebrates the legend of the man putting a pig on the wall to watch the band go by - and exactly the same story and pub name is repeated in Droylesden, Manchester, so that's Gornal's claim to fame down the pan, it'll have to wait for the Lawley Arms to celebrate their other famous pig on a wall, Sue Lawley.

Not outlandish but loverly pubs from my memory - The Highwayman in Cranham - sit of the finest Ox roast in the UK
The Air Ballon at the top of Crickley Hill - After a fire a couple of years back I'm surprised they didnt rename it "The Hot Air Ballon"

Yes, come to think of it...it could have been The Worlds End rather than The End Of The World. Driving westwards, its on the left with a prominent sign pointing towards it. Never went in it, but I remember those drives from Plymouth to Brockenhurst and Sway for weekends. Oh my youth, where did it go so quickly.
