Totally agree with Rick regarding FSDS vs 3DSMax, the stuff I am looking at will be done in 3ds as FSDS is so 'clonky'.

Rick,
I don't think these people actually want to move on, they're quite happy to take years to continue to develop for FS9.
In FS9 everyone could have a go and reach a modicum of experience and success with in there spare time envelopes, FSx changed all that, models are more complex, take longer to produce, the end result is that the casual modeller is going to baulk at it.
There will definitely be less and less addons from here on in, FSx has proved that, FSxi will expand the gap even more, you really have to be dedicated and enthused to carry on in the current climate, I propose that FSxi will almost be the preserve of the professional developers, what little casual or freeware is left in FSx will probably not transpose to FSxi.
The community has to accept that since FSx arrived there has been a divide, it will only get wider as time passes, its no good looking over the fence at the 'others', each side swears its grass is greener, truth is, each side has an equal amount of weeds to negotiate to reach the rich green grass. There is no point either side trying to convince the others that their grass's greener, far better to get your head down and chew your own cud.
Steeping aside a little from it all, what can FSx fans realistically do ?, you cant force FS9 users to move on, no amount of guns to their head will make them move, they wont force the demise of addons in FSx or the future, the only people who can control the future are the ones who have moved one, the future lies in their hands, not in the hands of those who stayed behind, though their absence does add pressure to make up the shortfall.
Addons are a shrinking environment and its only going to get smaller, the higher you drive the quality bar the less products you have to choose from, take a look at the train sim world, it went from MSTS which was equivalent to FS98 / CFS2 to FSx quality in one generation with the release of KRS, addons went from say 100 a month to about 5, TSx is another generation on from that and that will kick addons lower.
Regarding the numerous 146s, I can understand why they duplicate, they do because they can, being brutally honest about all this, those modellers are not making models that collectors want, they're not making models to make others happy, they're making models to make themselves happy, if collectors are happy as well then thats a nice by product, I think you'll find more and more developers taking that line these days, who are we really making models for ?, yourself or a fan base ?.
Best
Michael

I think Micheal's hit it on the head
I certainly won't be moving on until I aquire a new motherboard and graphics card which will take a while :-(
In truth, many computers are just to slow to even think of running FSX - such a shame
I reckon that the FS9 v FSX user list is roughly 50/50 so developers have to make a critical desicion when constructing addons
FSX, I feel, is too much of a 'game' - not a simulator
Cheers

On what grounds, I've seen a lot of this type of comment and I'm just wondering what people are basing it on?

Hi Skip
I keep seeing this comment too and it annoys the wotzits off me as it's unfounded twaddle.
if so FS9 is just as gamelike.
the only problem i see with FSX is it needs a PC from this century.
other than that no difference.
If you want to play the latest stuff you need the latest spec PC or near it.
try Brothers in Arms "hells Highway" (superb by the way)

Here we go again FS9 V FSX.. I have both I prefer FS9 yep you can have great models in FSX ie. bump texturing etc, which I have to switch off as it brings my "this century" pc to its knees, FS9 has been the most succesful FS variant over the years and folk will have to get over the fact that FSX will never have the same popularity.
As for only designing for FSX then what your effectively saying is kill FS9 ? which I hope does not happen, I love FS9 and I cannot afford a whizzbang PC to run FSX with all bells and whistles...I can in FS9, also I can run FSNAV...

I don't think any developers need to think about which 50 percent they are building for
The answer to me is simple
I have FS.9 so that's what I build for.
If I could afford to upgrade to FS.X and I was running FS.X I would build for FS.X
But I have 9, I am stuck with 9 and I am happy with 9
In other words I am building for the sim I have....not to please the World.
If I was a commercial developer then I would want to try and be at the cutting edge.......which would be looking from FS.X toward FS.XI
There is no way if I was running FS.X or any other Sim, I would build it for the version before the one I am using.
I honestly can't see the argument here
It would be nice if a thread on a new model could ask which sim it's for without going headlong into the FS.9/FS.X debate.

This is going a bit OFFTOPIC but...
Skippy, It's just the opinions of people like me
I'm sure that it's very good for the modern systems but when I have to upgrade the computer which is only 2 years old... well thats not my idea of a simulator
It's like another game I bought a few months ago - 'World in Conflict'. Superb graphics, If your computer can handle it that is
I'll end now before I get me arse booted!
Cheers

Tony, and indeed Garry who snuck in while I was typing,
I've got nothing against people developing for FS9 if that's what they run, sold my soul for a quad core, am experimenting with cloud computing in my own study, more processing power than the space shuttle etc.
However what I'm genuinely curious about is why people think FSX is more of a game than FS9, as far as I'm aware there's nothing you can do in FS9 you can't do in FSX*. FSNav doesn't work in FSX but that's not MS's fault and from reading some threads at Sim-Outhouse I believe the built in planning software in FSX does alleviate that problem to some extent anyway. So why do some people perceive FSX as more of a game?
P.S. Iain, just saw your reply. I don't think you can argue that needing a cutting edge computer makes it more game like otherwise FS5 on my old laptop would trounce FS9!
*Ok you can have rain drops on the windscreen but that almost makes FS9 more of a game than FSX.

Skippy snuck in but hers my post
Do you really think anyone is going to produce a new version based on the standard machines of two years previously?
Any new upgrade is going to push the forward limit.that is what progress is all about
So in anything the old ones get left behind
But the earlier version is still as good as it ever was and is still supported
This gives choice.............what more does anyone want
FS.X never stopped FS.9
The advanced stuff like the Hawk that is for X gets requests for a 9 version but there can't be one
People see the advantages of FS.X then moan because it's not made like that for FS.9...........
