Yes, based on the Eagle Squadrons of US volunteers who joined the RAF. For 73.5 kills they lost 77 pilots so you do wonder if everyone would have been better off if they'd stayed at home...

One shouldn't laugh at the loss of 77 pilots and I'm not.. far from it. However, that comment did make me titter

At the risk of getting back on topic, it seems the public is being invited to submit designs, but the winner will be a three-times-lifesize Spitfire, in a flying attitude
If there is budget for a monstrosity like that, why not have three life-size Spitfires, in a 'missing man' formation?
