Buying loose sugar which was then put into blue paper bags and weighed. Also at the grocers, butter being patted then the goods being delivered by the errand boy on a bicycle with the fron wheel much smaller than the rear(this was to make space for the large frame for carrying the large whicker basket).
Graham,look what you've started! :) EricT

We sound like a real bunch of old farts, but I think it is more a measure of how rapidly things have changed in the past 30-40 years. I'm originally from Inner London; my parents were genuinely working class, when they think back to their childhood they realise they now lived in true poverty (although they didn't necessarily think so at the time). When I was a child in the middle-late sixties there were still bombsites around from the war, tin baths etc. When I watch "Alfie" (not the unnecessary remake, the original) it strikes me as an accurate reflection of the environment I lived in.

Although we saw some material improvements as time went on (the move into the tower block was great, bigger rooms, more facilities etc), and advances in technology (colour TV, transisitor radios etc) the Britain we lived in was little changed. It wasn't really until the seventies that the pace of change really accelerated;cause & effect, not many people realise that the Ugandan Asians coming to this country & working all hours to rebuild their shattered lives also was the death knoll of early day closing, which was a feature of our lives well into that decade.

And let's be honest, love her or hate her, the thing that changed all our lives in this country was the blessed Maggie - I suspect the jury is still out as to whether she did more damage than good, but she certainly shook things up!

Thanks Graham, this has been a really interesting and thought provoking exercise.

Ooooh Smiths Crisps with the little blue wax paper twist of salt.
oh yes and when sixpence bought you a crackling great bar of Cadburys chocolate.

Do they still make Tizer?

and speaking of test cards on TV -- the countdown clock that preceded "educational television" on BBC1 during the day.

Don't forget the interludes on ITV as they waited for the next programme becasue the local was short.............each ITV showed it's own schedule then.

TV coming on at dinner time then going off again until Blue Peter at 17:00

Leif do you remebr XL crisps they were my favourite.

Airfix Betta Builder and Bayko building sets..........also Brickplayer which had real bricks :)

There were those, but until the 1980's we still had them on local ITV because the local programme was shorter than the next neworked programme....usually early afternoon and tea time

The last was Dana music vid...."Something Cooking in the Kitchen" or something like that.........shown about 15 times a week...most annoying

XL Crisps -- were they not the first to do a "Oxo" flavor?

and speaking of TV -- anyone remember the first Telstar feeds from NY? I think Cronkite was featured on them?
