Hi Joe :hello:

That's what I meant by is it viable. Indications are that it IS the disc and not the mobo but hey.. shit happens. If you can get a drive for $30.. I'd be inclined to give it a go as that laptop is far more powerful than the one I'm using at this very moment and this one is fine for browsing.. that sorta crap ;) It's a 1.73gig CeleronM running Vista with 2gig of ram. Vista isn't helping but I CBA to put XP on it.. it came with Vista installed ;)

:OT: Did you ever find the china mug you were after Joe?

Good Evening, Dave

Well, after having a look around ebay I'm confident the computer repair is indeed viable. But I'm going to wait untill next week before I buy one. There may be one I can get in trade here in town for some computer work.
Of course I'll be back to square one trying to get XP updated. I think I need to install a couple of thibgs from KB and then the SP will go in.

The cups have not been ordered Dave. I showed them where they can get them from and left instructions for creating an account but alas they haven't done it.

As the ol saying goes - "You can lead a horse to water, but ya can't get them to create an abay account.

Truth be said, and I'll say it. I mentioned to them I planed on creating an eBay account to sell some things I no longer want to keep. They're waiting for me to do that so I'll buy them and then they'll reimburse me.
Which I sup 8)pose that can be arraigned .... for a specified sum. B)smk

OK
So I scored a 40 gig HHD 5400rpm for 10 bucks from a local shop. Used, but it came with the test print out.
I have XP installed ( which went very fast ) All the Toshiba utilities drivers and comon modules etc.

Now, here is the catch.
I have two choices to get the OS ready for SP3.
The first is to install SP1a express. or sp2 SP1a is done by DL'ing a 1.9 mb file and the rest is done connected to MS server. problem... It requires VM ,which requires net framwork 1.1 ... and who knows what else. I've yet to find a link to get net framework 1.1. When I click on a link for 1.1 I go to a page for net framework 4.0.
SP2... well the link you posted Ben is retuning a page not found error. the url is no longer available.
Even if I did get a good link. Thats a sp2 IT pro version intended for multiple computers on a network.
XP sp3 is supported untill april of 2014.....that's if you've got it ...catch 22?

I' guess it's time for a call to MS. unless you have another suggestion Ben, Dave.... anyone?

Hi Joe :hello:

That's a tidy deal you got on that HDD. OK, it's not the fastest at 5400 but hey.. we're not looking for something to run BF3 :)

Here's a MS link for NET. Framework versions mate.. http://www.microsoft.com/net/download/earlier-versions

Links from this page should get you the version you want including v1.1 I think. This is older than god's dog now but some stuff may still need it. Latest ver is 4 I think! It's one of those things you hate.. well, I do. I never had a great deal of success with v1.1 updates :worried:

It's a difficult one to call with your XP SP updates mate. I don't think I have a version of XP that wasn't already at SP1.. I hung onto Me until the last moment.. so my choices were easier.. SP2 and be damned  I didn't go to SP3 for ages either but I guess you don't have the 'time' luxury as you're wanting to offload the laptop.

First things first.. I'd lob an AV prog on it mate. AV of choice for me at the mo is MSE.. the price is right and it seems to work fine :)

Once you've thrown the AV on, nip online and see if SP2 is cumulative (it should be) and if it's necessary to have SP1 installed first. Many if not all SP's come in at a fairly huge size but you'll find the install is much less if your system was up to date beforehand. Again.. you're on a fresh install so you're gonna be at the bottom of the pile. If you CAN install SP2 without SP1, then I'd try that. If it needs additional components (VM, NET.) you can download those later and play catch-up.

Another option is to get the AV on then go online and check windows updates. This'll be drawn out due to the age of the OS but it may give an indication of which SP's you'll need to install. If it only offers SP3 (having scanned your system as it does) then I'd bite my lip and miss out 1 and 2. If on the other hand it offers them all.. you'll know the worst.

Wish I could be of more help mate but as I said, I don't have an XP original less than SP1 so my choices were easier. Ultimately, you may have to put them all on in sequence or maybe put SP1 on first then SP3 but it's gonna take time to know where you stand as after each SP install, the pc will want to keep updating that for a while. If I think of anything more meaningful.. I'll add it ;)

I just cannot stomach typing out the bs support they just sent to me in an email.
But I'm ever so thankful of the support I've been shown here.

Probably too late to be of any use now, but it is possible to "slipstream" the Service Packs into the original XP. That way you create a version that includes SP3 and you then install that. Still a fair number of updates after that but a more recent starting point.

Not sure if that can be done starting from XP2002 but these are one source of instructions: http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstream ... llation-cd

I use a slipstreamed version when I need to reinstall XP - prepared it a long time ago and written to CD so I can't remember all the hiccups.

Hello Ian hind

Not late at all :)
I just got her done. Just under a 12 hour stretch from the bone stock XP 2002 to all security updates, including all optional updates (ie net framework, MSE , WMP 11 Japanese language support (don't ask)
Open office, foxit reader, winrar and a few other third party yada yadas.)

I planned on burning an image of the drive creating an ISO and burning that to a disk so Rick (the end user) will have that for safe keeping.
But I do thank you for the suggestion. :)

OK . for posterity

The Service Packs needed to update a barbone XP Home Edition are as follows:

Go to Microsoft KB and download the SP2 IT Professional network installation version.
( save the file, do not open/run from location)
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=28
Disregard - I repeat, Disregard the instuction: "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER" becuase it will install just fine.

Then download the SP3 IT professional network installation version (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe)
from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=24.
And again, 8) Disregard the cockamamie advice from MS: "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER" . it works.
(One interesting tidbit, it is stated the reason one doesn't want to do this is because there is a smaller, more appropriate download available on Windows Update).... riiiiiight. :|

Two ~ fallacies regarding that instruction B)smk

One: Windows update will not support any version less than SP3 of XP.

Two: The only other version of SP3 I found is a 544 mb ISO version where as the IT version is only a 316.4 mb file.
......... Hmmmmm *-) perhaps MS has a cocked up interpretation of the ol adage. "Less is more". :S more or less :dunno:

After installing SP3 I was able to use the driver update tool for a few hardware issues.
Then I just :) followed Bens advice  and let auto updates run a "few" times and went helped my friend install a rear main engine crank seal on his Blazer. Occasionally checking the update process.

Are ya completly knackered yet Ian - aka "speedbird fiver niner one"

Joe

Ok now I'm knackered.
