Yes - speaking of beautiful pieces of engineering (Alfa - NOT
).
Actually, a spider was instrumental in the failure of my marriage to the first Mrs Speedbird, believe it or not.
Things weren't going too well and tempers were short. She was Australian and grew up checking for redbacks under the toilet seat in the dunny and had little tolerance anyway for my phobia. One night we'd gone to bed and I was about to turn out the light when I spotted a medium sized spider in the corner of the ceiling. I started to suggest that I should go and get a stepladder and some sort of weapon to destroy it in case it fell on me during the night but I was over-ruled in no mean terms and the light went out. I lay there for hours imagining this monster creeping across the ceiling until it was over my mouth and then ... letting go
.
I eventually fell into a fitful sleep and then suddenly woke up screaming as something plopped onto my chest. Yep. I was right. It was planning to do it all along and it's timing was perfect even if it's aim was slightly out. Well, Mrs Speedbird was totally unamused and how she restrained from hitting me I have no idea. As if it was my fault that I was right! That was when I knew I had to leave. I couldn't live with a woman who was in league with the spiders in an attempt to destroy my sanity. It was actually the moment that I gave up
AND she'd made me buy her an Italian sports car. Even worse than an Alfa - a Fiat X1-9
