Glad to hear those to the east are fairing well. Looks a right mess from what I've seen online; the last satellite picture I saw from NASA showed the remnants just bumping into the eastern edge of Iowa. Don't normally see that sort of storm here, thankfully. At least with tornadoes, it's a few moments of terror and then it's done.

I think it was more the roof beams/joists creaking (or the framing for the dormer windows in the bedroom) rather than the whole house to be honest. The wind was out of the north to north-east so it would have been hitting the gable end wall of the house and the flat side of the dormer window extensions.
I'm glad the landlord chopped back a neighbour's tree during the summer as overhanging branches were starting to rub on our shingles, otherwise we'd have had loud thumps from branches hitting the roof along with everything else!
Update: Got through the night with several cups of tea. The winds have subsided and the rain is down to a light drizzle, expected to end around noon on Wednseday. The storm is still effecting a widespread area with winds and rain and snow. Larry, I am glad to hear your ok up there! I never lost power but around 8 million customers along the East Coast and other areas did. All in all I think Isabel back in 2003 was worse in the DC area but Sandy was far worse for other areas of the Colonies.
There is a picture of her going down in the above link. What on earth was she doing at sea in those conditions ? Its frightening enough in a supertanker or gas carrier, let alone a wooden tall ship.
I think they were enroute their normal winter stop-over mate. I believe they were fully aware of the hurricane and how it was shaping up, the Captain believed they could be where they needed to get to before it hit.. that or they could be at their destination and would have missed it. The Captain was experienced and had previously served on the Bounty's sister ship so he knew the type very well over many years. I think the term 'a calculated risk' fits the bill. I've seen it said that the safest place for a ship in a hurricane is at sea not alongside but of course, that is not the safest place for the crew. He may have been over confident.. I don't know. They had access to all the very best weather info and would have been aware of the hurricane gaining size and strength.. too late to do anything about it.
Many will question the wisdom of his decision to sail without doubt.
As for my globe-trotting cousin and hubby.. I watched their flight takeoff last night for SFO and checking FlightAware/FR24 this morning, they had a fair delay at SFO for the onward flight to Dulles but they're up and on their way. Should be at Washington around 1245GMT
Very sad about the Bounty. I wonder why on earth the captain didn't get in the lifeboat? Maybe he was looking for that missing woman. A quick question...Can the Bounty technically be called the HMS Bounty? Just curious.

As it's a replica and not the original HMS Bounty I would think not and photos of the vessel support that as it was named 'Bounty' on the name plates, no 'HMS' in sight.
'HMS' also signifies that it is His (or Her) Majesty's Ship and normally applies to ships serving with (or that formerly served with) the Royal Navy which the replica did not.
That's what I was thinking. Thanks for the clearification Larry. The movie studio did a real nice job of building the replica. Nowadays the Bounty would be a few small Hollywood sets and a lot of CGI.
