As a somewhat pointless aside,in 1967 I attended a four week course at Bletchley Park during my time working for what became BT.Of course at that time we had no idea of the Park's important function during WW2.And no,I wouldn't be able to crack the code,I find it hard enough to crack an egg! EricT

Its difficult i think to say what was the best thing done in WW2 but i think those people at Bletchley Park were number one and that rues The Man that Never Was must rate high and I was Monty's Double was not far behind,

We have been great in this county, its a bloody shame its all gone to the dogs now!

Agreed. The world owes a huge debt to the heroes of Bletchley Park. God only knows how many lives were saved because of their work.

So, it looks like a bunch of Canadians have succeeded where GCHQ failed! A history group in Ontario used a WWII artillery code book to come up with the following message.

From Sgt. William Stott, dropped in Normandy in 1944.

Hit Jerry's Right or Reserve Battery Here. Already know electrical engineers headquarters. Troops, panzers, batteries, engineers, here. Final note known to headquarters.

I wouldn't want to rubbish the Canucks (there are too many here ) but it makes less sense to me than the original!

GCHQ are being non-committal. But they would, wouldn't they?

I'm not sure I like the term "bunch of Canadians". Surely like other collectives e.g. "A Murder of Crows", "A leep of leopards" etc there should be a correct term. I think "A Politeness of Canadians" should be used. Unless of course it is a bunch of hockey fans in which case it should be "an Ugliness of Canucks"
