I'm always having to apply right roll whether the power is on or off (well throttled back) when I would think that it should at least reduce the torque effect & if its a RH tractor ( clockwise from the seat) then it should turn left - must have another look later this evening.... I think its quite difficult to achieve that effect!

Oh I agree completely Keith. I've found gettng something to fly straight and level is difficult

Couldn't you add an autopilot 8)

Nat tells you how to fly a rotary engined aircraft - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fVaP6dM1fs

Good old Nat (some say)

There are a number of pilots accounts of flying the Camel online and none mention the requirement for constant right stick or the left wing dropping.. only the use of right rudder to a) keep it straight in flight and b) to keep it straight while taking off. There were almost as many pilots killed flying the Camel in non-combat situations as there were in combat! :-O

In an attempt to get a feel for the real thing, I'm guessing that something has been grossly overdone as no amount of right rudder in flight will stop the left wing dropping. The real thing would appear to be directionally unstable (gyroscopic effect) but laterally more stable (given the whole thing is unstable). The model is simply unstable  No, that's not true  It is laterally unstable but directionally more stable. It will fly straight and level using only aileron where the real thing only needs rudder.

As I said before.. it's still a great deal of fun regardless ;)

It certainly gives one an idea of the problems the first aviators had to deal with, & the Camel was not one of the worst I believe!
Dave, yes, I think some things have been overdone looking at the .cfg file, not sure about the .air file. I still think its fun to fly though!
Must try the Blip switch mod as well.

Hiya Keith :hello:

Yes.. the more I fly it.. the more I fancy the blip switch  I had a look in the cfg too and some of the settings are extreme. As an experiment, I tried resetting all the torque/gyroscopic lines to zero but it had little effect as these are referenced from the airfile which must be a right barrel of laughs! :-O I turned it back to default as I'm used to it being as it is. I also put all the sliders hard right. The main difference is that it becomes unstable in both pitch and yaw :-O I found the left wing drop less pronounced though *-) Anyhoo.. back on girlie settings again ;)

I put a little traffic file together for the old Alpha Albatross DIII and Se5.. 2 for the former and one for the Se5. Two things I found.. AI will lose the plot in FSX as it did in FS9.. that is, if you hang about in close proximity to one.. it will continue straight on until it's time ends or it runs out of fuel. I can't remember which comes first. Secondly.. Johnny Bosch is either very clever by sending RC aircraft over or there's a shortage of tall pilots..

I decided to break away from this chap and head back home. I then realised I didn't know where home was so turned on FSCommander.. something WWI bods didn't have  We'd flown a good old distance.. hardly surprising as it's difficult to position for a screenshot and hit the print screen button while having one hand to steady the stick and the other to keep applying right stick :worried: When I landed back at Old Warden.. I saw a single Albatross and the Se5 but there was no sign of the aircraft I'd been chasing. Wondered if I'd winged the blighter but no.. when I zoomed out in FSCommander.. OW1 was heading for Peterborough. Perhaps he'd had enough or the RC controller had lost signal

Thanks Dave, Yes I did a little simple mod to the .cfg by increasing the prop MoI to get some blip switch effect, but it takes forever for the engine to stop when I do that - I also tweaked the torque values, but got a totally unstable kite. I'm getting used to it in standard trim & finding it fun to run up & down the M4 alongside White Waltham shooting at the traffic - I've got Just Flight VFR as background!
As for left wing low syndrome I'm sure the pilots would have got the riggers to twist the wings (flying & landing wire tweaks) to get it to fly S+L at cruise & possibly got them to adjust the elevator, if not the tailplane. (I gather Pam has issued a .cfg or .air mod to enable the elev trim, but I have not located it yet!)
I know my fathers Proctor had the time honoured cable taped to the top surface of the stbd aileron to take the load off the stick - why the top surface - dunno - but apparently most WWII test pilots if they were worth their salt, would tell the groundcrew 'It wants 6" on the right aileron' or some such length to level it off!

I like that.. 'give it 6'

I'd thought about adding trim to it but decided against it.

Popped back to EG2J again yesterday to try an 'FSX' Nieuport 17. As soon as it loaded.. it was obviously NOT FSX native as I couldn't see through the windshield but it's not a bad looking model and the prop is ok so I added it to my little AI circus :) It's not that struck on being AI I have to say. It bounces like a good'un sometimes and landing bring up so much smoke and dust, it fills the airfield  I may throw another airfile at it.. maybe off the Se5a or Albatross which are both nice and stable.
They're obviously a bunch of cowboys my AI pilots are. I let them all take off again last night and followed in the Storch.. following the lead aircraft which by this time, had become the Se5a, at a distance of around 1.2nm.. no closer. When I recognised the White Horse at Uffington below and to the right.. it confirmed they'd had enough of TNG's at Old Warden and were making a break for the south coast  I checked out where they all were on FSC and the remaining 3 were trailing behind.. the Nieuport a LONG way behind. I have their speed clipped to 85kts in the traffic file.. maybe a bit too fast for the Nieuport! :-O

I've found that using the throttle to simulate the 'blip' effect works ok and it spools up and down fine :)
