If we do get them would they be based at Kinloss. Now before someone answers saying Kinloss is closed I saw on the Fighter Group page on Facebook that both Belgium and Danish C-130 had landed there a while back.

I think Ben would have been quite relieved at the P-8's short range. It would have been unable to cross the pond to here.

The base is now an Army Barracks and even those the airfield is closed the runways have been maintained as a relief landing area. Nothing to stop the Army having a Herk in there if they want one I would think.

Don't forget that if Scotland does get a Yes vote they will be able to use Kinloss to fly their Haggis from
and unless they buy the P8 they will not benefit from ours because being a Foreign country we will not be flying around there.

The SAF - Scottish Air Force...or Royal Air Force Scottish Division...They might even decide to resurrect the Nimrod, if only to stick two fingers up to Westminster!

Just to be clear, the stated range is based on 1,200 miles out, 4 hours on station, and then 1,200 miles back, making its range significantly more than 3,500nm since it will cover at least 1200nm during that 4 hour patrol. The airframe actually has more in common with the Boeing BBJ/BBJ2 which has a 5500nm range without any patrol.dodger wrote:It does seem strange that the P8 Poseidon has a range of 1,200 nm [Lisbon is 1,012 approx from Stanstead] and yet the P8 is based on the 737-700 and the basic model has a range of 3,500 nm.

BTW, I can't take pics of it for several reasons, but I'm now face-to-face with a P-8A (actually one of the test airframes that is now in the main fleet) on a regular basis and it's an interesting plane. The raked wingtips are almost unnoticeable when you're so used to seeing winglets.
From what I've heard, the plane is loved by both the ground and flight crews and according to the guys, they're going to be flying the same profiles the P-3s are now, so it must have sufficient range to be able to stay airborne for 12 hours which is what the P-3s are doing.

Roger.
2011? Is that the time already?
Just as well it's only the Nimrods then, I'd hate to see the Neptunes go as well.
Cheers, Mike.
