I remember it well, Keith, trying to listen to MW through the whistles and bangs which always got worse as night fell especially in winter. I was surprised, though, to find out that the BBC began broadcasting the Light, Home and Third in VHF from 1955. Thinking back, the old valve radio we had at home in the late 50s and early 60s did have VHF though I could never pick anything up on it - must have needed and aerial which we didn't have, I guess.

Shame on you Nigel! How could you forget that Auntie also had the Third Network, later the Third Programme, which, in the summer months, carried the estimable 'Test Match Special' on its medium wave frequencies while its VHF service continued with classical music.

Yes Pete, the Third Programme completely slipped my mind! I suppose it shouldn't have because I surmise it become what is now Radio 3. Both my parents liked classical music but tended to listen more to British Light Music, the fare featured often on the Light Programme.
