It's free for a trial period then it goes onto a simpler version unless you want to pay for the full

Ok.....

Norton/Symantec - Large company, pumps a lot of money into retail outlets to sell it's product. Slows the system down and is bloated. Usually used by those who don't know any differrent and think the software works well.

AVG - Free, used by those who don't want to fork out. I repaired a system that used AVG and my then (Panda) anti virus found 158 viruses. The user didn't know any better because as I said before, you don't know when a virus gets through.

Avast - Same story as AVG. Scanned my mums PC which used Avast and Panda found 6 viruses.

Panda - Wasn't bad, had daily updates but product registration is awkward.

Those on the OcUK forums always recommend the same 2 programs which go for apx £30 each. Kaspersky & NOD32. Kaspersky is more accurate, NOD32 is faster and uses less resources. I use NOD32.

I know Ben did a lot of research and found Trend to be pretty good although I have no experience of that program.

The free version of AVG isn't a trial version. Its a basic virus checker, without the whistles and bells of the fully-featured commercial product. There is a trial version of the latter, but the free version is a separate download.

Don't be put off by the fact that its basic. It does everything you need a virus checker to do and, as I said, is updated free every few days.

Coupled with things like Zonealarm firewall, Ad-Aware, and Spybot: Search & Destroy, you've got your computer very well protected and all without spending a penny.

EDIT: Just read Charlie Bravo's post above  Ah well, nothing in life's perfect. I'll stick with AVG for now.

I used to use Norton but it certainly caused problems. Now use AVG Free which suits me with automatic updating.

Did a full scan the other day and two viruses were found

So what crack or porn sites had I been visiting? Err... well actually they were both from Avsim!

c-130_sound.zip and a C-135 file - not sure which but one of the repaints of Rok Dolenec's 707.

None of the files are now at Avsim, so someone spotted them later.

Ian

Edit: just found a version of c-130_snd on Avsim dated 24 May 2006 - this does NOT have the virus file in it

Concur with Nigel.
I have been using Kaspersky for a number of years now.

It can make you jump out of your seat the first time it finds a virus. It emits a squealing noise like a pig getting it's throat slit. It certainly kills them.
It tends to catch and kill most things on their way down the line, so they don't even get on your system. It automatically updates about every three hours.

I back this up with a regular scan with spybot s&d (freeware), and adaware (also freeware).

Its surprising how much smoother the system runs.

I have used AVG for a few years, I run it alongside AVast! 4 both seem to coexist without conflict, each catching something the other one might miss. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy to confirm whether Spyware Blaster is actually stopping malware getting in. To tune up the PC for speed and security I run System Mechanic 6. A bit belt and braces but it works.

Personally, I've never had any problems with Norton, any time that some kind of virus has come on my PC, its been stopped and deleted. I've been using it since the days of Windows 98 and wouldn't chose anything else.

On the other hand, my Dad had Mcafee on his and it let loads through, and the same happened to my mate who was running AVG.
