Modern technology! Great when it works, awful when it's abused.

I"m glad to see I'm not alone - I'm averaging about 4-5 deletions a day at FFDS, and about the same at Fiddler's Green (card models)....
I've given up on trying to ban them. Usually they just use up one IP and I find it easier just to delete the post and delete the account that ban IP, ban e-mail, ban username - AND delete the post.

There is a note on the Cambrian site saying they are under constant attack from automatic spam dumping in the visitors book, it's everywhere
Too much of this around. People that do this should be banned from the internet by law for a time.
I know that would be difficult to police but if caught they could be thrown in klink.
Awful people.....

It's a pain Felix/Garry for sure. At least they cannot make posts here and have to be activated in order to do so. Banning IP's and email addresses seems to have little effect but we'll hang in there for now. I note that my hotmail address is also 'busy' with spam email too.. most offering some 'medical' service or other and likewise, adding them to the spam list seems to be having little or no effect. Thank goodness, hotmail is not my main address

I NEVER had spam in my netscape account but in the last week there have been several a day......Viagra, diets, claim my prize........yeah right
Good though that they can't post but unfortunately sitting on the front page as a new member before activation or deletion, the web site can still be opened and there has been some bad ones.
One a while ago I opened and spent the rest of my day cleaning the system. :curse:
Don't remember the name but is was a trick name and seemed like it was something else.
On question, just something I wondered.....is the ISP apart of Windows....the hard drive or the modem set up?

Hi Garry,
Your IP depends very much on how your system is setup. You may have two IP's.. one static and one dynamic. Hopefully, one of the tech's here can explain IP's a little better as I tend to feel my way in a dark room with a very dim light!!

The usual purpose of these automated users is to post crap and usually slip a link in to some dodgy website. They thereby rise up Google's "Page rank" system, as it then appears to google's crawlers that their site is popular and useful because it is linked to from other pages.

Well, I went in and put a "Really Obnoxious Stuff" board and category as the first Board/Category at FFDS, and it seems the bots are going for it. Makes it easier.....

Banning IP addresses is probably not worth doing; 'professional' spammers work by putting software onto an unsuspecting victims PC and using that to spam - I believe the technical term is 'zombie' PC.
I think Jonesy has made the most sensible suggestion, if the registration process has a default manual step that should deter a lot (but probably not all, unfortunately) of these interesting new members.

Thank's for the explanations
I suppose anything can be set up to send out an ID when on line.
Just wondered as it did seem that to grab a number and put that number in a banned folder would not be enough simply because those people who do such things would want to make sure another one takes over.
I wish these people would turn their talents into something useful :curse:
