By the By - as an ex naval gentlemen - What ships used the Proteus?
Leif
Wikipedia seems to have an answer...
"A marinised Proteus engine was used to power the Royal Navy's Brave and Bold class fast patrol boats, after testing on the frigate HMS Exmouth"
John got just about the lot there. Exmouth was the only ship of any size to use the Proteus.. the remainder being FPB's. I think Scimitar, Sabre and Cutlass used it too.. the last three FPB's we had ;-) I'm told the German E boat crews were impressed seeing flames shoot out the back on startup though ultimately.. they were not very reliable as marine engines
If Marine Proteus wet started like The Brit did I can imagine the Germans wondered what the FPBs were doing -
it was impressive from the outside - If you were inside the first thing that went through your mind was "How do I get outside!!!""
Ah.. nice to see the RN dragging things off course
Garry.. all the old Type42 Destroyers had the same setup.. 2 Olympus and 2 Tynes. The County Class Destroyers Rick and I were on also had COGAS but the 'Gas' was provided by G6. These were only fired up where max power was required (eg.. entering and leaving harbour or full speed)
