The Red Arrows all look the same. That doesn't stop people from flocking to watch them.

Back in my RAF days (violins playing in the background) many stations staged Battle of Britain days in September. Our station, RAF Colerne, was packed with visitors who came to see the operational aircraft of the day which were based all over the UK. No fancy liveries back then. Even our old Hastings took part in the displays, and it was a surprise to most of the crowd, what they could do in expert hands.

We also had a display by the Hunters of 111 Sqdn. They all looked the same too!

Dennis.

ps. What about a diamond 9 of Miss Demeanours?

Bare in mind, they're not trying to promote the RAF to the kind of people who frequent these forums (and it's f*** all use promoting them to me), in much the same way that the majority of ads for the services these days don't say 'Join the Navy, Fly things, Kill Foreigners etc.' Basically Observers, Pilots etc. recruit themselves, supply outstripping demand etc. what they're trying to maximise with their advertising budget is the take up of AETs, SACs etc. To that end sending a couple of Lynx to Southsea can't be justified to recruit aircrew, the right kind of people will apply to do the job anyway. However to raise the RN's profile to recruit stokers, communicators, warfare officers etc, the choice is a high profile add campaign, or stick some stickers on the side of a Lynx. For the RAF sticking them on a Hawk/Tucano probably has the same effect.
Like it or not the Armed Forces don't have the high profile you may think they do, an essentially free way to raise that profile is to slap some stickers on the side of our aircraft (even if the RAF method ruins the flow of the scheme, and I'm not saying the RN's is great either). Due to an expanding economy funded by a mountain of debt the forces have to recruit people however they can, in competition with organisations that traditionally weren't competing for the same pool of people.
Ultimately if it couldn't be justified on the grounds of recruitment/PR then these days there would be little to no military participation at air shows.
As an aside the Black Cat's scheme almost got killed by the IPT on the grounds that it'd massively skew the fatigue life of the aircraft involved as they'd do all the display flying. Oh and the design was done for free by someone on holdover, I'm not saying we're cheap but...
