Just a thought in the meantime, Dave - does John Young's A.I. Hawg Wild give you any pointers ? John's a stickler for detail and accuracy.

I've not bothered looking for anything as you're restricted taking phots in the AAM purely because there's so much in there! The odd shot here.. the odd shot there.. nothing structured at all. I'd love to see them outside to get a true sense of size but I doubt I'll get the opportunity.

Typically, having trawled through all my Duxford pics, nothing is of any assistance - except the following, which give hints rather than hard and fast information.

Two pictures of the yellow wingtip: from what I can see, the yellow stretches from the very tip of the wing to the aileron recess, on upper and lower surfaces. On the second picture, you can also see the USAF lettering - just.





This picture is of Hawg Wild on her ferry flight to the UK, and indicates the size of the wing USAF lettering - I assume its the same size on the starboard upper wing. Trouble is, I cant find any pictures of the underside of the port wing as it is today, so I can't tell you whether it's there.



This one gives another indication of the lettering size. The edge of the S in USAF seems about level with the outboard end of the aileron trim tab:



Not much help, Dave G, sorry, and I'm not going to be able to get to down to Duxford again for a couple of weeks.

Glad to be of some meagre assistance, Dave. Now, looking through the photos on that site you linked to, the riddle of the under-port- wing USAF is solved. There ain't one. But the leading edge of the yellow wingtip seems different from the pictures I posted.

EDIT: On closer examination, it's the curved leading edge of the wingtip that's confusing me - it isn't so clear in my photos.

Think I'm done with this one for now.



I'll zip it up and upload in minute.

Impressive paint as usual Dave. I can see the old B29 being rolled out of mothballs very soon
