And there is a reason for the Tridents main gear also being quirky: (The four wheels being abreast of each other, instead of two in front, two behind.) This was to save weight; the idea being to use only one axle.

Regarding keeping on the centre line, what about Taxiing around a bend? It must take experince to do that in a large Aircraft. Perhaps Tonks can say if there is a special system used for large Aircraft..? In FS its more difficult because you have no perspective of how close you are to the line. :k:

The Trident steered better one way than the other, thats why if you look at the "dumbbell" turns on the end of the runway extensions at Hatfield, you'll see they are "biased" to one side.

I recall as a nipper at Ringway, watching the Tridents taking off from 06 and flying past the Airport hotel (pub!). Watching the undercarriage always made people gaze as it retracted away into its housing.

A good talking point I suppose. BTW do any or have any other aircraft adopted this method of retracting their undercarriage?

Tonks
Reminds me of the classic response......

Tower: (To airliner after landing) "Just to let you know, but on approach you were a little left of the centreline." Captain: "That is correct, sir...and my first officer was slightly to the right of it."

A big thanks to Peter for giving us the info on the effects of the nose gear on flight dynamics! That one is stored in my brain to bore my parents with when my dad brings them up again (he flew on them as a pax).

I love the little quirks that the Trident had and we are so priviledged to have a Trident captain amongst us!
