I was just curious as it sees often when you read pilots careers they right seat a type then go to another type then return to the left seat.
Not in BA Garry...Once you get your Command, you stay in the left seat. I got my command back on the Merchantman/Vanguard but when I moved onto the Trident, I stayed in the left seat but with some First Officer type training on the Conversion Course...So I never actually operated a Trident as a First Officer.

Thanks Peter

The move to another type in my post was still right seat before moving back to an earlier type when getting command. You then stay in the same seat.

But what I was meaning is they seem to go back when getting a command to the type they flew before the last right seat type rather than move across on the same type.

But of course once they are Captains they remain so.

It almost seems that you move up types then when the promotion comes you move back one then carry on from there.

Yes that tends to happen mostly, but not all the time. Basically the most senior people are on the senior types. Then each year they work out how many retirements are going to occur (these are mainly from the senior aircraft types) and then decide how to impliment the moves. Conversion courses are expensive so they might like to save money by NOT just shuffling a whole load from the aircraft they are on to a more senior type, till the vacancies at the top are filled and new chaps come in on the junior types.

A lot of money can be saved in planning these moves carefully. It was becoming fairly common in my day for what we called a "Command on Type" to occur...i.e. a First Officer on say Tridents would do his Command Course on the Trident and just swap over seats...The course could be shorter and the experience would help the new Captain settle in to his new duties without having to unduly concentrate on the aircraft systems, as he would already be familiar with those.

I wasn't sure quite how it worked apart from the often interviewed Concorde First Officer that were becomming Capatains on 757 and the like, but in the Concorde's case it was a very senior aircraft so their must have been quite a queue.

Here's a selection of Emerald 748 sectors before they ceased flying. Flight Number - Sched Departure Time (UTC so add 1 hour for local) - From - To - Flight Level

Yes but they had a limitation for that course and that was that you had to have 8 years to go before retirement (55 years)...So that ruled out a lot of very senior guys (including me)...But the Concorde course was the most expensive by far.

Hi CB

Looks like my cut and paste missed some routes off. I have a feeling Leif may have meant GUR as Guernsey. I knew it as GCI or may also have been GUE. Again with the ABD-BER-ABD route, I have a hunch it could be may be intended to be ABZ-BGO-ABZ as I knew it - Aberdeen and Bergen.

It is for this exact reason we should try and use the 4-letter ICAO or at least full airport names to avoid confusion.

Hopefully Leif will see this post as he knows exactly what airport is intended.
