This one led to some varied suggestions.
Those who identified the Gloster Gauntlet, in order of arrival were Mick (woody901), PeteP, Pete (Motormouse), Joe (blanston12), Ben (TSR2), and AllanL.
The actual subject was a Gauntlet II of 56 Squadron with red and white chequered stripe on the fuselage only. Similar looking, in black and white, was the 19 Squadron blue and white chequer on the fuselage and upper wing. The last-minute replies changed the situation dramatically, with Ben nailing the correct mark and Squadron, to take the Knows Art Award :)

Diamonds for PeteP, Pete (Motormouse), Ben and AllanL :

Gold for Mick (woody901):

Silver for Joe (blanston):

Because Pete (Motormouse) and AllanL had researched the Squadron markings and knew it was 19 or 56 Squadron, a Bonus Star:

Congratulations and thanks to all who had a look.

SECOND ATTEMPT, SPAMHAUS BLOCKED ME EARLIER
THIRD ATTEMPT
FOURTH ATTEMPT
It doesn't matter what book I use, the smae image can always be found on the www
Not only that, they often turn up as famous photos.
Case in point, this particular image was used at the Tangmere Museum and was immediately recognised by PeteP, who even knew that the pilot was D.Smith of the RAAF. IMHO, you can't get more accurate than that, so Pete gets the Knows Art award :)

All answers were top notch, with everyone naming the Spitfire F Mk XII, of 41 Squadron.
Diamonds to all of you: Eric (Tomliner), Mick (Woody901), PeteP, Pete (Motormouse), Ben (TSR2) and Simon (simondix)

....and you've all been so good, you all get a Bonus Star:

BTW, Spamhaus showed a different IP address each time it told me that I was blacklisted; none of them was my actual address AFAIK :dunno:
