Congratulations to:
Brian Franklin,
PeteP,
chrispbits,
511Flyer,
Dev One,
AllanL,
Ben,
Who all correctly identified the HAL HJT 16 Kiran.
As far as research goes, it seems that:
Mk I was powered by a RR Viper turbojet, had no guns or hardpoints, and had a small aerial under the nose.
Mk Ia as above, with two hard points on the wings.
Mk II Powered by a Bristol Siddeley Orpheus, resulting in a reshaped outlet, (the outlet is obscured in the photo anyway), four hard points on the wings, two guns in the nose, a fin below the nose, generally described as a yaw stabiliser, but possibly an aerial.
Some images, including photos on the net, ascribe Mk I descriptions to aircraft with the nose fin. My source book calls the photo a Mk II, which I do not believe. Detailed drawings seem hard to come by. I found a reference to a 1975 publication of a cutaway, but I don't have that.
I'm impressed that you all nailed it as a Kiran, and although I'm feeling that the photo depicts a Mk I, I'm giving diamond badges to you all.
Gentlemen, start your pinning on. ;)

That's why I missed it. I saw the roundels and though it must be British or French, maybe Italian. But in things aviation related my brain never goes to the sub continent.

I was pretty sure it was Indian, but much searching found nothing comparable.

It works fine for me Keith.
Odd that it appears on a WW2 site, though. :dunno:
This is the drawing that I found a reference to, don't know why the drawing itself didn't pop up then. Today, here it is; there's even a pulled out image from that 1975 magazine on sale on ebay. :-O I would have liked to see a Mk II cutaway, to confirm that fin.

Time to strain those brains again; holiday is over :OB:
I'll give you a clue, seeing as it's first for the year, and the images are not as sharp as I hoped: "An echo from the past"

Ah, nice easy one to start the year, Mike. ;) PM sent.

Thanks for taking the trouble to post these quizzes - long may they continue.

Happy New Year to you and all the other denizens of the CBSF forum - always one of my first internet visits of the day.

Pete (who's lunatic wife left at 06.30 this morning for a dawn swim in the sea :dunno: )
