Who all correctly identified the HAL HJT 16 Kiran.
As far as research goes, it seems that:
Mk I was powered by a RR Viper turbojet, had no guns or hardpoints, and had a small aerial under the nose.
Mk Ia as above, with two hard points on the wings.
Mk II Powered by a Bristol Siddeley Orpheus, resulting in a reshaped outlet, (the outlet is obscured in the photo anyway), four hard points on the wings, two guns in the nose, a fin below the nose, generally described as a yaw stabiliser, but possibly an aerial.
Some images, including photos on the net, ascribe Mk I descriptions to aircraft with the nose fin. My source book calls the photo a Mk II, which I do not believe. Detailed drawings seem hard to come by. I found a reference to a 1975 publication of a cutaway, but I don't have that.
I'm impressed that you all nailed it as a Kiran, and although I'm feeling that the photo depicts a Mk I, I'm giving diamond badges to you all.

That's why I missed it. I saw the roundels and though it must be British or French, maybe Italian. But in things aviation related my brain never goes to the sub continent.

Odd that it appears on a WW2 site, though.
This is the drawing that I found a reference to, don't know why the drawing itself didn't pop up then. Today, here it is; there's even a pulled out image from that 1975 magazine on sale on ebay.
