That sounds more like it. OK, I'll just have to learn to put up with the shortcomings of Flightsim I guess. Thanks for the info.

OK Mate

It's a pity the sim can't handle every aircrafts little foibles but it's as real as it gets for £40  Hat's off to Fraser for making this old girl (and his others) 'seem' to be doing the real thing. ;-)

Now.. I urge all Eric Clapton fans to get their butts over to BBC4 sharpish as he's on till 2300  :tunes:

Ker-dunk!

Ian..

If you look at this bit of film.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaFpNtvxv7Q .. you'll get a visual reference at what should be happening in flightsim. First, we started engine 2, then 1, then 3.. all are running with the START/OFF at START at this point but no.1 is getting a little hot and bothered so START/OFF for that engine was switched to OFF. You will see the prop speed increase and hear it wind up. I have to apologise for the sound of the Meteor fire truck doing it's best to spoil the procedings  Next, no.4 is run up.. we leave it a while to stabilise then START/OFF is turned to OFF on 2.. 3.. and finally 4. The engines go from low to high ground beta.. all at the flick of a switch (switches) and the next stage would be to open the throttles and roll off. Unfortunately, we have nowhere to go so we leave em be  Done operationally, this process would be a lot faster I might add ;-) Not sure who took that bit of film.. (I was on the flightdeck) but there are similar clips available on youtube should you be so inclined ;-)

That was fantastic, thank you for linking that in. The sound of those Tynes was music to my ears. Do you do those often? I would love to be there for one.

Hi Ian

Glad you enjoyed it  I have some footage I took on the flightdeck somewhere but I can't remember the links  :doho: :brick: If I find em.. I'll post the links for ya ;-)

The engine runs are a bit of a bone of contention at the moment mate. I have a feeling that the bit of footage in that link is probably going to be the last time we run all 4. The good news (if it can be called that) is we're working toward running 3 and 4 more regularly (eg.. a lot more than once a year!!) plus.. no.3 still has the Aircon compressor which gives the Vanguard it's 'Vanguard' sound so I'd sooner it be 3 and 4 than 1 and 2 ;-) I've no idea yet when the next run will be but I'll be sure to post down in E&S to let you all know

Well, I made it. I sucessfully took the Vanguard from EGLL to LEPA, and a very smooth (-34 fps) landing too, if I say so myself :) I could not get the speed above 185 kts at FL270 - does that sound about right? I need to practice a bit more with the autopilot and the SFS, not what you'd call intuitive at first inspection. :)

Hi Impearse

270 seems high for a Vanguard

Hi Ian..

No, the SFS doesn't become intuitive until you know how it works but it IS possible to 'feel' your way around with some success ;-)

What sort of distance is LEPA from LHR?? Though possible, I rarely go up to the dizzy heights of FL270.. the furthest I go is LHR - Malpensa.. that sort of distance and I've found FL183 (safety height for the Alps) does just fine. As the Alps are the biggest bit of rock we're liable to encounter.. this is the height I keep to for anything above a 2hr flight. Below that time, it's really not worth the effort. 185 wouldn't be too far off the mark I'd guess and your groundspeed would be super-dooper ;-)

Super-dooper ground speed it should be Dave......The Vanguard was one of the fastest Turbo props. :dancer:

The flight plan distance was just under 1400km. I'm not sure of what sensible cruise heights for the turboprops would be, so any guidance would be most appreciated. :) The info I have says max altitude of 30,000 but not much about weights that would allow that. It's another thing on my list for my visit to the BA Museum.
